Subject: Ooh good! More non-normal goings on at Zyra.org.uk (Issue52)

2002/08/18 18:14 Publication of Issue 52 of www.zyra.org.uk

No need to be normal

Hi!

Hi to all 187 of us on Zyra's Circular List and to those who receive the e-mail by means of forwardings!

It's been over a month since the last issue of the site, so as you can appreciate there is quite a lot of new stuff!

It's tricky to know where to begin. How about with that weird picture? Good idea. Right, there's a new front page picture which you can see on the front page; well that goes without saying, but you can see a wider-angle view by clicking on the front page picture!

The new site is hosted across nine ISPs, a fact which becomes disconcertingly apparent when you explore such areas as the photography galleries http://website.lineone.net/~zyra/photog.htm and stuff linked off the ISP Servers Status Page www.zyra.org.uk/zsites.htm (Fans of Internetishness may spot the finesse of those status lamps and how that's been implemented!)

But on a less technical note, MASHED POTATO. The Mash page www.zyra.org.uk/mash.htm got an extra item added when someone asked about Pom Potato and I located some avenues of enquiry. The info found from such "infrequently asked questions" then goes on the site, so... www.zyra.org.uk/pom.htm

Density of AIR goes on the page www.zyra.org.uk/density.htm

And I really should add the reply to the enquiry from someone in New York YWCA who asked about scrap cars, as per www.zyra.org.uk/scrapcar.htm as I have been unable to get the e-mail reply-address to work!

There are always new affiliate links mentioned, and in this issue there is now a Laura Ashley page www.zyra.org.uk/lashley.htm which all adds to the Prototype Shopping Portal www.zyra.org.uk/shopping.htm - this being how the site is funded, affiliate links, where if you shop online via my site I get paid a (small) commission. These commissions all add up, and I'm starting to do quite well out of it all. To that effect, I ask anyone considering buying just about anything to see if it's possible to buy it via Zyra.org.uk! And if it's not found, let me know and I'll see if I can find a way of adding it!

It's no secret that the reason this site does better than the hard-sell overcommercialised sites is that it's got lots of interesting stuff and doesn't try to hype the selling of stuff so much! People prefer to buy stuff from a generally friendly and altruistic place than from somewhere that's all pop-ups and inappropriate adverts. See advertising policy www.zyra.org.uk/adverts.htm

Now about Pictures of Dogs. This page www.bostanremovals.co.uk/dog-pix.htm is the top page on Google if you type in "pictures of dogs". Amazing! Pictures of Cats www.zyra.freeserve.co.uk/cat-pix.htm is number 3 last time I checked by going to www.google.com and putting in "pictures of cats". This is pretty good too. However, I did at one point receive an odd e-mail in which someone accused me of being cruel by putting cats near to wine and thereby getting them to drink it!

Gadgets. Indeed now the Gadgets page www.zyra.org.uk/gadgets.htm has a link to THE GADGET SHOP! Oh good! At last! I wondered when that would be sorted out! So now it's possible to buy an even wider range of toys for children of all ages, like 20,30,40,50... etc!

Meanwhile, Furniture Fan and Cedar Outlet have made the regionalisation mistake as detailed by www.zyra.org.uk/regional.htm and have been replaced as USA Furniture vendors by Furniture Domain www.zyra.org.uk/furndom.htm

Another company that made the same mistake was 101 Guitars, who have also missed out and been replaced by Guitar Trader who are now being advertised at www.zyra.org.uk/guitrad.htm

It's not true about the CATS is it? They didn't really think cats could be fooled into drinking wine did they? I still find it astonishing to think anyone would been fooled like that and have e-mailed me such a comment!

Now here's a good one: What do you see in a museum that's not very bright? The LIGHTING. But does this need to be quite so dim? Maybe not. There may be a solution at www.zyra.org.uk/muslight.htm which is a shareware invention ( www.zyra.org.uk/invent.htm )

The Belvedere Hotel in Fife now has a dedicated page at www.zyra.org.uk/belved.htm which is good because it all adds to the golf feature at www.zyra.org.uk/golf.htm , an area which tends to be short of golf "links". Also see gold "links" www.zyra.org.uk/gold.htm for no particular reason.

But while we're in a poetic mood, how about this interesting offbeat contribution by Patrick Wood, "FREE ART FREE PEOPLE": www.zyra.org.uk/freeart.htm

Well, I don't know. I'm not even halfway through the list of stuff to mention and I've already nearly finished off a half-gallon of tea. It wouldn't have been so bad if I had remembered to get some milk, but I've been so busy, so it's got about half a can of EVAP in it. And I am not sure if I've eaten any meals today either.

But never mind! What about the Campaign for the release of Juan Carlos González Leiva? As included at www.zyra.org.uk/leiva.htm - I am not sure about this, so anyone who has some ideas about it please let me know.

More GAS links at www.zyra.org.uk/gas.htm and a new item of special interest to those looking to compare prices of gas, electricity, phones, etc at uSwitch www.zyra.org.uk/uswitch.htm

Knickers! Yes, well, there is this new category of LINGERIE at www.zyra.org.uk/lingerie.htm - see, it's a matter of trying to encompass the entire world even if it's not going to cover everything.

A free DOMAIN anyone? Remember Freenetname's amazing offer? It was great, (see glowing report at www.zyra.org.uk/fnn.htm ) but they stopped taking on any new accounts a while ago. However, recently an opportunity has cropped up which may allow a free domain and a free webspace to be linked. The idea is, you first sign up to Tiscali http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/zyra1/tiscali.htm and enable a free 50 megabyte webspace. Then upload an index page to it (required), and then go to www.zyra.tk and get a free Tokelau domain name which you link to the webspace. Of course you can be a .co.uk or a .com or a .tv etc by www.zyra.org.uk/123-reg.htm but this costs money. At the .tk business it's free. Interesting?

An e-mail arrived here recently offering me the chance of making a huge amount of money by improving my job prospects by means of getting a degree. No work, exams, or ability was required, and so this was a way that equality of qualification was available to all, regardless of ability. I couldn't help thinking that as I'd already got a degree by going to university for years it meant that I had perhaps been a bit foolish in not realising I could have just paid a few dollars to these people instead. Oh shucks! www.zyra.org.uk/qualqual.htm

Now let's see what else there is: Directory Enquiries UK www.zyra.org.uk/192.htm , buy a copy of the UK Electoral Roll at www.zyra.org.uk/192com.htm , new OUTDOOR category at www.zyra.org.uk/outdoor.htm , Books For Children at www.zyra.org.uk/bfc.htm , and an update to the Capital One credit card at http://website.lineone.net/~zyra/capit1.htm

Buying a house, you'd get a "search" done on it. But what about buying a car? You can get a "search" done on that too now at Carwatch UK www.zyra.org.uk/carwatch.htm

Do you remember I mentioned Interior World Decor Magazine www.zyra.org.uk/intworl.htm ? Well unfortunately it appears to no longer be about interior decor but has changed lines of business. In fact if you try to link to it, you get a site about some kind of scheme which is supposed to make you very rich. Now you might think I'm a bit sceptical about this, but I have a suspicion that even though some getting-rich is going to be done, it's not going to be YOU that's doing it if you sign up with that! Pyramid Schemes are really not a good idea so be warned! See www.zyra.org.uk/pyraschm.htm

And now a special announcement: Thanks! to GODCHECKER.com for giving me a nice link and announcing the new page of unorthodox religion, mythology, and other non-standard beliefs. See www.zyra.org.uk/belief.htm

Also a special thanks to Heather Stott for sending me a signed copy of her book ACTIVE AGAIN which is about her battle against the health service and ill-health. This is linked from the page of wheatinesslessness www.zyra.org.uk/coeliac.htm and other pages.

A thumbs-down to Air France, however, for refusing the site on their affiliate program, so they get a write up at www.zyra.org.uk/airfranc.htm , but at least they were frank about it and stated in all honesty that the reason they were refusing the site was because it was too weird, individualistic, etc!

What a marvellous place the Horniman Museum is! See www.zyra.org.uk/hornimus.htm , not just for being an interesting museum but also for being "delightfully idiosyncratic" , eclectic, diverse, etc and for other reasons which are a bit close-to-home!

But on the un-good side, slavery and forced marriages. This unfortunate problem and what to do about it is gone into at www.zyra.org.uk/slavery2.htm

Also on the side of gloom, though not as bad as the slavery and forced marriages obviously is the unfortunate business about the antivirus letter. Until recently if you'd caught a virus there was a good chance I'd tell you about it by sending an e-mail explaining about viruses and what to do about them. But someone I told about a virus has taken the hump, accused me of sending the virus, and not apologised. So now I generally don't send the warnings out anymore! This whole unfortunate matter is explained at www.zyra.org.uk/avirlet.htm

Meanwhile on a happier note, tropical islands for sale www.zyra.org.uk/islale.htm , which is perhaps a bit ahead of time. To help speed the day when such grandioseness is more practical, see "help this site" at www.zyra.org.uk/helpsite.htm

And now it's GOODNIGHT ALL at some unearthly hour of the morning GMT, and I hope you HAVE FUN!

Regards to ALL!

Zyra

And now comes the bit at the end where you might expect to get some nonsense about it not being spam, or some kind of idea that you've been included in an opt-in list when it was really harvested, or maybe even some kind of revised redefinition of what you are allowed under US Law to regard as spam. But no, if you're getting loads of garbage arriving you should check the page including things to do about it at www.zyra.org.uk/spam.htm , and removing yourself from Zyra's circular list won't reduce the amount of stuff arriving much at all. It will reduce the amount of INTERESTING stuff arriving, however, and that is your prerogative, and if that's what you want you can write to no-more-circulars# zyra.org.uk (which would be a shame). Meanwhile, to those who are not actually on the list (and have received this by some kind person forwarding it on), you can sign up by writing to circulars-yes-please# zyra.org.uk or fill in the form at www.zyra.org.uk/form.htm (well, you could fill OUT the form, I'm not fussed. I always used to fill IN forms, but that was a long time ago in an age when dogs were self-propelled and could be taken for a walk rather than their owners having to walk them).
