Ordnance Survey MAPS
Military-grade maps available for everyone!

Ordnance Survey is a famous name in Maps, especially in Great Britain. Ordnance Survey maps are famous for being such good quality, and there is a curious history behind this. A long time ago, maps weren't very accurate and used to say things like "here be dragons" and were all out of proportion. Britain was one of the first countries to realise that military victory versus a variety of marauding potential invaders depended on having good maps. So, military quality map-making began, and it was soon obvious that the high-quality military precision maps had other applications as well as defence. Ordnance SurveyYou can see a hint of this history in the name "Ordnance Survey", the word "ordnance" being a military term.

In the words of Ordnance Survey "Ordnance Survey is the national mapping agency of Great Britain and is the leading provider of paper mapping products and outdoor essentials. The brand is highly regarded by ramblers, map lovers and all those who like to spend time outdoors. The strength of the geographic data produced by Ordnance Survey has fostered a strong reputation amongst loyal customers who have been using OS Explorer and OS Landranger maps for years. The brand also continually attracts new customers who have discovered the many benefits of paper maps.Ordnance Survey

The Ordnance Survey e commerce site has recently been re launched and is now easier to navigate, products are easier to find and the order process easier to complete. Our loyal customers will be able to locate and buy their favourite maps in half the time and will be confident that the product they are buying comes direct from the leading authority on geographic information in Great Britain".

Now bearing in mind that this whole land-surveying trig-point geometry business started a long time ago, long before GPS, lasers, space navigation, etc, it is astonishing how accurate even the early OS Maps were. And the modern maps? Well, last time I heard, they were using a 128 megapixel camera in an aeroplane to create high-res map data.

So, there it is, military-grade maps available to the general public, for an affordable price.

Watch out for special offers at Ordnance Survey, for example free compass or pedometer, 3 for 2, 10% off, win a walking holiday, etc.

Also worth knowing: Official partners of OS include Garmin, Anquet, Philip’s, AA, Memory Map, A-Z, etc.

Ordnance Survey MAPS are available as paper maps which unfold, and with a bit of practice you can fold them up instinctively in the right way. Even the standard paper maps are surprisingly resilient against the British weather which is notoriously wet. However, there are also de-luxe plasticised versions of the maps. These are almost waterproof, but where do you see them? Libraries. Still, I expect you can get a waterproof plasticised map from the official OS site

Ordnance Survey is also mentioned at All Jigsaw Puzzles, MAPS, Famous Brands, Good and Bad things about the UK and a few other pages.

Just don't put OS Maps on the photocopier, because Ordnance Survey get very touchy about that. You can see why, after they've gone to all that trouble mapping vast areas of countryside, and then someone snaps a 5p copy?

And yes, it is "Ordnance Survey", not Ordinance Survey or some other variant.
